Mentor – Mentee

Five things I was reminded of in three days from my mentor: Over the last three day one of my mentors in the Lord came to spend three days with me, my family and church. The following are either things I picked up fresh from him or things I was reminded of in a fresh and brand new way. 1. A steadfast and continued hunger for God… I saw him in the word, in prayer, in worship continual. Now, I realize that some people can fake these things… And I know he was here just for three days, but you can tell that this was a life style. He talked passionately about just being with the Lord… And not using prayer as a tool to get things from God… 2. A high level of compassion… I saw him weep, I saw him go from door to door in the neighborhood, I saw him pray for people, I saw him write names down in a prayer book for continued prayer way after he left. I saw …

The CHARGE

Part 2 There are some important things in life, more important than making a buck or being popular or having the latest fashionable things. There is a God in heaven who cares about everything we do, and wants to point us to the most important things, the things that really matter. Here are some of those things Paul the mentor outlines for his son in the Lord. Things he wants Timothy to persist in: 6. Endure Suffering persist in it when life becomes hard and difficult… When persecution begins to happen because of the word, when personal problems like sickness, and loss and disappointments begin to happen… There are plenty of wonderful “highs” in serving God, but there are also afflictions to be endured.  See verse 5 7. Share your faith Persist in it even when people try to shut you out… Not everyone is called to be a pastor or a preacher, but everyone is called to share their faith…be bold, step out, tell your story as for you do the work of the evangelist… Verse 5 …

In the book, The Leadership secrets of Billy Graham, W. Clement Stone writes a story about Billy Graham trying to find his way to the post office in a small town. Upon asking a boy how to get to the post office in this small town and upon getting directions he needed, Billy invited the boy to come to his meeting that evening, saying, “you will hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven.” The boy’s response was hilarious – he said, “I don’t think I will be there, you don’t even know your way to the post office.” Myra, Harold and Shelley, Marshall. God is rich in mercy Ephesians . 2:4 Because of God’s mercy, salvation in Christ is available to the world (Titus 3:5) The earth is full of God’s mercy (Ps. 119:64). God’s mercy reaches to the heavens (Ps. 36:5; 57:10). God’s mercy is the ground for a person’s appeal to God in times of trouble (Ps. 59:16). God hears us when we pray because of his mercy (Ps. 66:20). Above everything else, God demands mercy of us. In God’s sight, mercy is superior to religious activities (Hos. 6:6). The prophet Micah said that God requires us to “do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God (Mic. 6:8). Mercy is love with hands and feet. It is not a vague, general benevolence but a love that shows compassion in deed as well as word. Hope comes alive in people because of God’s mercy (1 Peter 1:3). To be merciful toward our fellow humans means to have compassion on those who are at our mercy. Jesus said to the…

Teachability

Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands get guidance Psalm 3:5 Learn and maintain a Teachable Attitude The great value that the book of proverbs seeks to instill in a person is the value of a teachable spirit; the willingness to learn and grow in wisdom no matter how far long a person already is. Louis L’Amour said, The more one learns the more he understands his ignorance. I am simply an ignorant man, trying to lessen his ignorance. Are you willing to grow? Are you willing to be stretched beyond where you are. Is there still room for improvement in your life or do you think you are too smart?  Are you willing to learn new things? Are you willing to listen and learn from people who may not hold to your school of thought, philosophy or even your religious beliefs? There is always room in our lives to learn something new. The smartest people in the world are those who still have room in their lives to learn from others. They …

Face and Admit Limitations

Definition of VULNERABLE from Merriam-Webster Dictionary 1.  capable of being physically or emotionally wounded 2.  open to attack or damage : assailable <vulnerable to criticism> 3. liable to increased penalties but entitled to increased bonuses after winning a game in contract bridge A leader without admitted weaknesses has no need for teammates. A leader who reveals no vulnerabilities provides no opportunities for teammates to make a significant contribution. Accepting brutal facts about human limitations, including our own personal weaknesses is crucial to authenticity. The quote above is taken from the book “The leadership secrets of Billy Graham.” This is a great book. I encourage you to get it. My spiritual father bought it for me sometime in 2005, but I keep it close by in order to grab it and refresh my memory on the wisdom in it.

Too good to be true!

The Romanticized ideals of Perfection Successful pastors and church organizations almost always seem cooler from a distance. But the closer you get to the pastor or the church organization, the easier it is to see all their flaws, blemishes, and failures. I am not talking about immoral or sinful behaviors. If you find yourself under such leadership it is more than okay to flee. I’m talking about things like leadership styles and flaws, relationship hiccups, poor conflict management skills, bad choices in the little things of life, etc… Usually people begin to flip out big time when their expectations of a pastor or a church organization doesn’t measure up with their romanticized ideals. They begin to become negative, slanderous, disrespectful, arrogant, rude and sometimes rebellious. A Personal Illustration For me, it happened when I was young and on a church staff. I didn’t know better, and I soon started flipping out when I began to see some things that I kind of disagree with. Every time we had a staff meeting somebody in the group will say …
