Victory in the face of Opposition

One of the fundamental truths about the kingdom of God, the church or believers is that that kingdom, church, the believer always seems to thrive or triumph or win even in the midst of intense opposition. Jesus left us these promises – He said: “I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” “The Kingdom of God shall advance and the voilent shall take it by force.” “If God is for us who can be against us?” Nehemiah reminds us in chapter 4 about a few things we need to do when faced with opposition.  And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.” When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to …

Jabez, a man of travail

There are levels in prayer that we will never know until pain becomes a friend. Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 1 Chronicles 4:9 The name Jabez is a name associated with pain. He got his name from his mother while she labored in pain to bring him forth. Being a man of prayer, himself, I believe the knowledge of that experience left an indelible mark on Jabez’s life. It opened his eyes to see and understand something much deeper about prayer. He understood that nothing of immense value comes about without pain, suffering, hard work and travailing prayer. The birth of a child “Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world.” John 16:21 The deliverance of a nation “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is …

Pray like Jabez Prayed

Jabez ‘Called’ and God granted. The word call carries the idea of a heartfelt, passionate prayer. This kind moves us beyond the laid back, lackadaisical prayers we are often guilty of. Scripture says, “He rewards those who diligently seek Him.” May He grant you clarity of vision this next season.

He will Hold me Fast: A Post Election Day Prayer for our Nation.

From the beginning of the election season, I’ve watched with eager enthusiasm. Along the way, I made my feelings abundantly clear to my family where I stood on the issues. I also made a comment or two to close friends but never made a public comment either on social media, this Blog or from my pulpit. Wait, maybe one time, as I shut down a guy who shouted, “build the wall,” as I made a sermon illustration on an unrelated topic about China’s Great Wall. I believe everyone is entitled to their own political beliefs, but when we gather for worship the focus should be Christ-centered. So, I led  the church I pastor in prayer on a regular basis for our dear and beloved country. Something I hope to continue moving forward. As you have rightly suspected, this nation is deeply divided, but it is important for us to heal this great divide by calling on the Lord. We are at a critical point right now. We cannot miss this moment. If we will ever reach a …

Praying the Word: Parent Edition

Effective praying is precision praying. Prayer is most effective when it has as its backbone reliable substance in the word of God. The Bible says that when God sends forth the rain, He aims for a precise result. The same is with the word of God, after it is sent forth, it does not return to God void. It accomplishes exactly what it was sent forth to accomplish. Scripture even assures us that God watches over his word to perform with razor precision what He intended. It is therefore imperative that when we pray, we pray with precision. When we pray we must pray God’s word. In this series, I would like to take us on a journey, an adventure to discover the power of precision praying. I will seek to show you examples of how to pray for various aspects of our lives. So today, I would like for us to begin with the privilege of parenting. Recently my status as a father was upgraded to father of not one, but two teenagers – …
