Soothing Consolation

When the cares of my heart, are many, your consolations cheer my soul. Psalm 94:19 This passage has been on my mind since yesterday morning. It not only blessed me richly through the day, but it also was a timely word for a friend with whom I had lunch. So I wanted to take a few minutes to share a few thoughts about it. The cares of life/my heart We all have it from time to time. The concerns of this life is a life choker. It chokes, squeezes and suffocates the life out of you. If there is an ounce of “Word of God” in you, well, it goes after it with a vengeance, leaving you full of busy, anxious, perplexing, worrying, fearful, distracting and doubtful thoughts. How do you handle vexing and contrary ideas? Your Consolation I am so thankful that we (believers/followers of Jesus) have Him – the One who “comforts us in all our troubles.” I am happy that we have the promises contained in His word that bring sweet consolation …

10 thoughts from Passion Week & Easter Sunday

I know, you might say, “too late for a post on Easter, it was two weeks ago.” Well, you might want to read till the last two points in this post to see what I have to say about that. But first, let’s get started with the first thing I learned about Easter during the passion week and Easter Sunday. Everything I’ll ever need is already provided “And he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all the things that are written through the prophets shall be accomplished unto the Son of man.” Luke‬ ‭18:31‬ ‭ Martyrdom – no!/ Reckless devotion – yes! The call tho lay down one’s life is not a call to martyrdom- it’s a call reckless abandon of self… “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John‬ ‭15:13‬ ‭ True friends are those who are around when life a hard. We are called to be that kind of friend and hope to …

The Prayer for Success

I visited my Twitter feed this morning and the first thing that caught my attention was a tweet from one of the pastors I follow. In two days his church is having a conference, so pinned at the top of his page is a question and a poll of four things attendants are expecting to see as a result of participating in this conference. Out of four desired outcomes, almost fifty percent of attendants are expecting to see breakthrough in their finances, as it relates to their business. I have never met anyone who doesn’t want to be successful. Parents, pastors, bloggers, businessmen and women all have this one desire in common – success. One of my favorite Bible verses to pray is Psalm 90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands! The common mistake we make as it relates to praying for success is to use a misguided definition of success. For most, success …

Jabez, a man of travail

There are levels in prayer that we will never know until pain becomes a friend. Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 1 Chronicles 4:9 The name Jabez is a name associated with pain. He got his name from his mother while she labored in pain to bring him forth. Being a man of prayer, himself, I believe the knowledge of that experience left an indelible mark on Jabez’s life. It opened his eyes to see and understand something much deeper about prayer. He understood that nothing of immense value comes about without pain, suffering, hard work and travailing prayer. The birth of a child “Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world.” John 16:21 The deliverance of a nation “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is …

Jabez, a man of ‘weight’

I hear your voice, I hear it piercing through the night. I feel your heart, I feel the beating of your heart. It was a whisper. But it got louder. Now, it’s clearer. You said, ‘Come away to my secret place I want to spend some time with you. Come away to my dwelling place I want to pour my love on you.’ Walter Bright 1 Chronicles 4:9 Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” Exactly 10 years ago, today, I bumped into a missionary at the San Francisco Airport. He had just arrived back to the States from his first two years of work in various parts of West Africa. He was excited to find out that I was born and raised in that part of the world. So, we sat down for a little chat about his travels and ministry. After reminiscing for about an hour, he said these words to me. “I have profound respect for African Pastors. …

Pray like Jabez Prayed

Jabez ‘Called’ and God granted. The word call carries the idea of a heartfelt, passionate prayer. This kind moves us beyond the laid back, lackadaisical prayers we are often guilty of. Scripture says, “He rewards those who diligently seek Him.” May He grant you clarity of vision this next season.

Intro: Life and Prayer of Jabez

“A man whose soul never “calls,” never cries, never looks, never waits upon God, is not living to the end for which a man should live; he is not truly living at all.” Bible Illustrator the lifestyle of waiting upon the Lord… this waiting upon the Lord is something that  completely out of style. The kind of life that an ordinary person lives – day in and day out (I acknowledge) is extremely difficult. Especially if you’re putting in a completely masked out work week. The only time you have is a little window on Sunday morning. But I believe if we truly want to live – making the time to live in this posture of waiting upon the Lord will be worth it! Our study of the Jabez Prayer is going to help jump start this lifestyle. 1 Chronicles 4:10 Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm …
