John 1:4, 5

Light in Dark Places Life, what is it, where did it come from, how is it sustained? Contrary to popular thinking, life has its origin in God. He is the maker of everything – the giver of life. When He made man, “He breathed into him and man became a living soul.” If we want to talk about life, its origin and how it is sustained, Jesus should be at the center of that discussion. The scripture says, “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Everything, this world, human life, depends on Jesus for survival. “In Him we live and move and have our being.” Though most men do not recognize this, it still is the truth. Jesus is not only the sustainer of physical life he is also the giver and sustainer of spiritual life. When he stepped out of eternity into time, into this dark and evil world, he was on a mission to lay …

Encourage thyself in the Lord Monday

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God. 1 Sam. 30:6 KJV There is going to come a time in your life when the world around you will seem to be caving in. Your closest friends, trusted colleagues and faithful brothers and sisters will all turn their backs on you. There is going to come a time in your life, when all hell will break loose over you. You will be hard-pressed from every side, and your enemy will seem to have  gained the upper hand or advantage over you. And of course, Mondays will come around once a week to remind you that you are in a dead-end job, and nothing’s working. When that happens, you need to lay hands on yourself and encourage yourself in the Lord. So, listen to this song and tell yourself the following: God is still on His …

The Power of Meditation

What is Meditation? Meditation is an act of focusing one’s thoughts upon something to get a deeper insight or understand of that thing. It is allowing one’s thoughts to ponder or muse or in some instances turn a thought over and over in the mind as if chewing on a piece of meat to soften it before we can swallow it. It can either mean to think upon God, His word, or his works. In our context today it means thinking and reflecting upon God’s word with the goal of internalizing and personalizing eternal truths in order for them to affect our lives to the glory of the Father. This goal is usually attained through our keen observation of the text we are reading, our careful interpretation of what the text means and our humble application of  that text to our lives. Scripture References And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by …

Let my words be few!

Check these out: Don’t speak unless you can improve on the silence. –Spanish Proverb Never miss a good chance to shut up. –Will Rogers The more the words, the less the meaning, and how does that profit anyone? — Ecclesiastes 6:11 We speak thousands of words every day. Good words, bad words, criticized words. We’re so flippant with our words; quick to criticize, quick to slander. We stab and we injure and we hurt, argue. we swear multiple times each day using words. It’s said that both men and women speak more than 27.000 words combined daily. But talking too much is not cool. God calls us to let our words be few in prayer, in conversations, yes, in every sphere of life. Ecclesiastes 5:2 – Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; let your words be few. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger Here is why: It …

Things that are Better

Ecclesiastes 7:1-29

A good name is better than precious ointment… verse 1

It is better to have a regular quite time than to be a party junkie… verse 2. The house of feasting often shuts out thoughts of God and eternity

Godly sorrow is better than all the laughter in the world… verse 3

It is better to be sensitive and sympathetic to the hurts and needs of others around you, than to be thoughtlessly lost in diversion and amusement… verse 4

It is better for a man to be rebuked than for him to listen to all the pop culture and make me feel good sermons in the world… verse 5

The Great Exchange: Burdens for Rest

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 The word labor here can be illustrated by the story of a man who has a great load laid upon him, which he must carry to a certain place: every step he takes reduces his strength, and renders his load the more oppressive. However, the load must be carried using his utmost exertions to reach the place where it is to be laid down. It is only logical for a kind person, seeing his distress, to offer him help to ease his load, that he may enjoy rest. This is exactly what Jesus offers. Back in the day, when training a new animal (such as an ox) to plow, farmers would often yoke it to an older, stronger, more experienced animal who would bear …

Is there anything worse than blindness? Yes! A person with no vision.

Pilgrims with no vision of the promised land become proprietors of their own land… Instead of looking upward at the Lord, they look inward at themselves and outward at each other. The result? Cabin fever. Quarreling families, Restless leaders, Fence building, Starked-off territory, No trespassing! signs are hung on hearts and homes. Spats turn into fights, as myopic groups turn to glare at each other’s weaknesses instead of turning to worship their common strength. _______________________________ Max Lucado, God came near (Portland, OR: Multnomah, 1987, 161. It pays good to fear the Lord,,,

Who is the man who fears the LORD? Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. His soul shall abide in well-being, and his offspring shall inherit the land. The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for he will pluck my feet out of the net. Psalm 25:13-15. The word man in the passage is a generic therm and includes female. So anyone (both male and female who fears the Lord can rest assure that they will be rewarded. Six enduring blessings from this portion of scripture: The Lord makes It easier for you to discover His will, his direction and His plans. One of the reasons why people find it hard to understand the will of God is because of hidden and unconfessed sin. Sin tends to create spiritual dullness and insensitivity. Romans 12:2 says, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your …

Show me a Blessed man and I will show you a Godly man

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1 Things he doesn’t do: He does not follow the counsel of the wicked He deos not imulate the ways of sinners He does not follow the examples of scoffers Things he does: He delights in the word of God He meditates on the word of God What are the visible results of his choices: He is well norished spiritually He bears all the spiritual fruits He is fresh and never butned out He prospers in whatever he does He receives praise from his maker He has fellowship with the father He is guided by His maker There …

Hugo Cabret on Purpose…

I rented the DVD last week and finally watched Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and to be frank – I loved the Movie. Here are a few thoughts I gathered from Hugo Cabret on the subject of purpose: I like to imagine that the world is one big machine. You know, machines never have any extra parts. They have the exact number and type parts they need. So I figure, If the entire world is a big machine, I have to be here for a reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too. If you lose your purpose, it’s like you are broken. Maybe that’s why a broken machine always makes me a little sad. Because it isn’t able to do what it was meant to do. Maybe it’s the same with people. The amazing news here, first and foremost, is that God has an incredible and divine purpose  for everyone of us. That we can come into a saving and loving relationship with Him through his son Jesus Christ. Than again he crowns us, lavishing on each and everyone of us creative …
