7 Spirits

The Seven (7) Spirits/ By Walter Bright The seven Spirits who are before His throne speak to the perfection and completion of the Holy Spirit. John uses an Old Testament description of the Holy Spirit. The idea of the seven Spirits quotes from the Old Testament. Isaiah 11:2 describes seven aspects of the Holy Spirit: 1/. The Spirit of the LORD 2/. The Spirit of wisdom 3/. Understanding 4/. The Spirit of counsel 5/. Might 6/. The Spirit of knowledge 7/. Fear of the Lord It isn’t that there are seven different spirits of God, rather the Spirit of the LORD has these characteristics and He has them all in fullness and perfection.

MachineGun Preacher

‘Machine Gun Preacher’ . . . for Christians Studio releases “secular” and “faith-based” versions of poster for film; Coming to theaters next month, Machine Gun Preacher is a movie that will appeal to some Christians because of its subject matter. It will also disgust some Christians . . . because of its subject matter. The movie, opening in limited release on September 23, is based on the true story of Sam Childers, a drug-dealing hell raiser as a teen and young man who began to turn his life around after finding Jesus. Today, he spends much of his time in Somalia and neighboring countries, allegedly fighting pockets of the LRA (Lord’s Republican Army) with his own band of gun-toting rebels while sweeping up orphans who have been left behind — and then putting them into orphanages that he has built-in the area. Some Christians will love the film for showing Childers’ path from rebellion to redemption. Others will hate it for the same reason; the first 15-20 minutes are as in-your-face and gritty as anything you’ll …

Who can enter through the city by the gates – the gate represent Jesus… he said broad is the road that leads to destruction and narrow is the gate that leads to eternal life but few find it. He was referring to himself.

Mother Teresa, CEO

Jason Byassee Mother Teresa, CEO How NOT to write about leadership. It is not hard to make the case that Western Christians, especially mainline Protestants, have long been profoundly confused about business. We have treated church members who run or work in capitalistic endeavors as if they were doing something slightly sordid. The real work of ministry is done by those who pastor churches, teach students, run non-profits, or pursue other avenues of do-gooding. This is ironic in that one of the Reformation’s chief charisms is the priesthood of all believers—the claim that a vocation to pastoral ministry is no more essentially holy than any other work God calls one of his saints to do. It is also hypocritical in that all of our ministries depend on the funding of our sisters and brothers who make their money the only way anyone ever makes it: in business. There is a real opportunity, then, for sensitive and probing theological work integrating theology and business. Some have begun to do just such work, and I anticipate much …

Five marks of revived churches

Five marks of revived churches J. I. Packer, writing in God in our Midst (Ann Arbor, 1987), pages 24-35, proposes that, among the variety of God’s ways, five constants appear in all biblical revivals: 1. Awareness of God’s presence: “The first and fundamental feature in renewal is the sense that God has drawn awesomely near in his holiness, mercy and might.” 2. Responsiveness to God’s Word: “The message of Scripture which previously was making only a superficial impact, if that, now searches its hearers and readers to the depth of their being.” 3. Sensitiveness to sin: “Consciences become tender and a profound humbling takes place.” 4. Liveliness in community: “Love and generosity, unity and joy, assurance and boldness, a spirit of praise and prayer, and a passion to reach out to win others, are recurring marks of renewed communities.” 5. Fruitfulness in testimony: “Christians proclaim by word and deed the power of the new life, souls are won, and a community conscience informed by Christian values emerges.” via Five marks of revived churches – Ray …

William Carey at 250

Aug 19 2011 Timothy George|8:13 AM CT William Carey at 250 Earlier this week, William Carey’s 250th birthday arrived. Born on August 17, 1761, he was the son of a poor school teacher in the tiny village of Paulersbury. Taught to patch shoes in a cobbler’s shop, he was converted to Christ as a teenager. Soon he was gripped with a passion for sharing the gospel with those who had never heard the name of Christ. In those days, missions was a naughty word, something obsolescent, restricted to the days of the apostles long ago. But Carey read the Great Commission differently. “Go ye,” he said, “means you and me, here and now.” He challenged his fellow Baptists to respond to this call, to “expect great things from God, and attempt great things for God.” The result was the first missionary society organized by evangelical Christians with the aim of carrying the Good News of Christ to all parts of the world. So on June 13, 1793, William Carey, his wife, Dorothy, and their four children—including a …

The Oldest A/G house of worship in the USA. Oldest church in northern california

The church is entirely constructed of California oak and redwood siding. I stands as sturdy and strong today as when it was first built. The pews in this church circular in build and amazingly beautiful. Made of eastern oak they are as hard and heavy as iron. In her book, Tehama: Little City of Big Trees, Clara Hough Hisken claims that “six pews would form a complete circle.” She also claims that they were especially ordered and designed by a firm in Michigan. But other stories of the pews coming to the USA over the horn is usually told by older church goers.

Fan into Flames

I recently discovered a simple but very thought-provoking poem over the internet entitled ‘Fire.’ It’s a poem written by Judy Brown. I will let you read it first and then share something very simple thought: Fire… What makes a fire burn is space between the logs, a breathing space. Too much of a good thing, too many logs packed in too tight can douse the flames almost as surely as a pail of water would. So building fires requires attention to the spaces in between, as much as to the wood. When we are able to build open spaces in the same way we have learned to pile on the logs, then we can come to see how it is fuel, and absence of the fuel together, that make fire possible. We only need to lay a log lightly from time to time. A fire grows simply because the space is there, with openings in which the flame that knows just how it wants to burn can find its way. She said “building fires requires attention to the spaces between, as much as the wood.” If we …
