Men die when they relax

2 Samuel 11:1-26

In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. Instead of going to war David decided to relax

Instead of being there to lead, David decided to relax

Instead of showing up to do his duty to country and to God, David decided to relax.

Relaxation can be a good thing for a leader sometimes but not when the lives of others hang in the balance. It can be a great thing sometimes but not when it keeps you from fulfilling your call. This kind of relaxation will put you in the wrong place at the wrong time. And that is exactly where we find David – exposed to sexual temptation, adultery, murder, lies and  cover-up. On that day of relaxation two men died: One spiritually, the other physically. One was visionary leader who let down his guard and lost his focus.  The other a good soldier and husband who simply obeyed his orders without any knowledge of what was going on.

Lord please help us to not be caught relaxing on the job. Because men die when we do.

    I read this title wrong initially. I thought you meant, when men die, they relax, which is actually kind of the way I see it…

    Let us not relax, though…looking at it from David’s perspective.

      hey Jessica thanks for the comment… “when men die they relax” is a great truth that will preach too. Scripture says, “we rest from all our labor.” Stay blessed! walter

    Thank you for this timely word. The battle is raging where I am right now. It’s not a good time to kick back and relax. It’s onward for this Christian soldier! 🙂

    Sobering stuff. Scary… to think of how much this actually happens. We continue to pray for our husbands/fathers/sons. For it only takes one vulnerable moment for this to happen. Great post

      You are right, the best thing to do is to keep praying for those on the front lines – Pastors, leaders, husbands, fathers and sons, because one vulnerable moment can change everything. Thank you for your comment.
