Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I’m about and the motives of my heart;
See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—
then guide me on the road to eternal life. Psalm 139:23 – 24 – The Message
Have you ever stopped and asked yourself why you do the things you do as a believer? Have you ever questioned your motives and checked your heart to see just why you do the things you do in the name of God?
What would you say if one were to ask you the following”
- Why do you go to church?
- Why do you read you bible?
- Why do you give financially to your church?
- Why do you volunteer?
- Why do you pray?
Is it possible to completely miss the right reasons for the questions above? Look with me at a few passages that I think suggest that it is possible:
- Mathew 6:1-4 – Practicing your righteousness before others in order to be seen
- Matthew 23:5-7 – Doing things for God only to impress others
- James 4:3 – Praying only to satisfy the flesh
- 1 Corinthians 15:19 – Trust God only for this life… get stuff… get toys… get gadgets… God is generous
- John 14:15 – Serving God out of fear
- Philippians 1:15-17 – Preaching the gospel out of rivalry
- 1 Corinthians 13:1-3-serve, give, sacrifice without love
This short list is just a sad reminder of the things that motivate some to do what they do. We should never let the praise of men, guilt, pride, duty and obligation motivate us to give, pray, volunteer or follow Christ. Giving to God our tithes and offering only because we think he can double it should never be our motivation. We should never be motivated to obedience because we are afraid of the negative consequences that He may inflict on us.
As followers of Christ we must be motivated by unconditional love for the master. Our every move must be pure and true – geared toward bringing Him glory. We must remind ourselves that our “motives are weight by God” (Proverbs 16:2). Finally, we must daily look at our hearts prayerfully –
Investigate my life, O God,
find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
get a clear picture of what I’m about and the motives of my heart see for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—then guide me on the road to eternal life.
