In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”

I hope I can impress on you today through this short passage the need to live daily in a spirit of worship and continuous repentance. I don’t think you can truly get to a genuine, deep and rock solid repentance without deep and meaningful worship. Worship is the plow that prepares the heart for the planting of the promises of God. It is a way through which our eyes are opened to the glorious beauty and splendor of Almighty God. When worship truly happens, we not only see who God really is, we also see who we are. And the fact is – even on our best days we are not holy or perfect, but He is, and always is.

In this passage, Isaiah saw the Lord seated upon His throne. He saw the King, the Lord of host. He saw the glory of the Lord not only in the temple but also filling the whole earth. He heard the voice of Almighty God as He called out, and felt the shaking of the foundation of the thresholds just from the sound of His voice. But that exposure to the divine did not only expose the prophet to the glory and holiness of God, it also opened the prophet’s eyes to his own spiritual condition. He saw himself. His spiritual condition was lay bare before his very eyes and he said –

woe is me… I am undone.

I love the ESV translation of this passage, it says,

woe is me, for I am lost.

Now, for a prophet like Isaiah to say something like that is a bit frightening. He wasn’t a disobedient man of God. On the contrary, he was a God-fearing prophet. But somehow the uncleanliness of his lips went unnoticed until he got into a deeply meaningful time of worship. We need to live in a daily revelation of the holiness of God and one of the ways that happens is through worship. Our sins are exposed, our lives are lay bare before Him and we come out renewed, cleansed and better equipped to live a life worthy of Him.
