Presbyopia! What?

You are getting old!

I visited my optometrist the other day for a complete eye checkup. After he completed the checkup, he asked me if I liked 50 Cents words. I said no! He said well, I am going to tell you anyways because that’s the condition that you have.

He said you have Presbyopia! And I went – WHAT? He said, when you hit or pass the milestone age of 40 you will notice that it becomes a little more difficult to focus on objects up close because of Presbyopia. You are simply getting old!

Well, I picked up my glasses this morning. It is nothing fancy but here is what it looks like:

Okay, you are 39 and younger,  sitting there laughing or going poor guy, he’s getting old. But trust me your time is coming. Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes 12:3

when the keepers of the house tremble,  and the strong men stoop, when the grinders cease because they are few,  and those looking through the windows grow dim;

Here is what Solomon is talking about:

  1. Keepers of the house tremblethe hands and arms which protected the body… are now feeble
  2. Strong men stoop – like supporting pillars, the feet and knees, the strongest members… they are now weak… they bow
  3. The grinders cease – the molar teeth… they are now idle
  4. The windows grow dim – the eyes; the powers of vision… are now going dim

Some of you may be a little depressed already by this ‘getting old’ thing – but here is the good news – it gets way better:

We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us…

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed… therefore we do not lose heart…

Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

2 cor. 4:7, 8, 16

The Good News

The good news is that even though you may be getting old, you have treasures of eternal significance inside of you. Wrinkles, gray hair or even what we call ‘senior moments may be a part of your life now, but there is something on the inside of you that never fades or loses its youthfulness. You may be losing your sight, losing your agility, losing teeth or even your health – but inwardly you are being renewed day by day. God has placed something inside of you that will never grow old or fade. So go out and live to the fullest. Your best days are yet to come.

Your are more than your outward appearance

Some choose Botox, a face lift, a breast lift, some good old fashion dye to cover up the gray hair or some “Mary Kay” to cover up some of their wrinkles and imperfections. Whatever you do to hide some of your outward aging or imperfections, never forget that there is something more to your outward appearance. There is an inner you, graced by God’s own image, a part of you that is fearfully and wonderfully made, stamped with perfection and beauty, crowned with glory. Never forget that you are beautiful and handsome just the way you are. With Christ on the inside of you, even though you are getting old outwardly – yet inwardly you are being renewed day by day. Never Forget that!

  1. My knees ache sometimes in the winter(means snow is coming)….I have to hold the newspaper or restaurant menu at arm’s length to understand what my eyes are attempting to filter through to my brain, and once I found my house key in the refrigerator and my pocketbook in the dirty clothes basket next to the washing machine…But in God’s eyes…. I am still perfect….in my eyes too, but I need my glasses to see myself in the mirror:-) Very nice blog entry!!!:-)
